It is difficult to give up what we know even if it is no longer beneficial or useful. The letter of Hebrews was written to a small church consisting of mostly Jewish believers. They were steeped in religious tradition and history. For centuries the people of Israel had looked forward to a Messiah, but now that he had arrived few would actually believe it, despite all the evidence. It is not surprising that the writer of Hebrews would find it necessary to remind this church once again that there is no turning back. The perfect sacrifice has been made, the promised Messiah has come and it is Jesus Christ.
